Agape Dancers

Agape Dance Troupe Directors - Demetrios Kouretas and Maria Zannis

Welcome Back Agape Dancers!

It's that time of year again! Agape Dance Troupe practices will resume in October. The calendar for the fall is below. Practices will remain on the first and third Mondays of the month, based on parent survey feedback from June. We are asking that you register your dancers for the year so we can keep better records of who is involved with the dance troupe, and so we can update our e-mail and mailing lists. Please click on the link below to register online. This information just gets sent to me directly for our dance troupe files.

Below is explained the breakdown of the three groups. This breakdown is in response to parents' concerns regarding the developmental differences between a 1st and 6th grader, which are vast in regards to dance, attention span, and how they are taught. This will allow our instructors to best teach your dancers so that they can get the MOST out of their dance troupe experience.

Troupe Groups:

Asterakia ("Little Stars") - Grades 1-3 (Practice from 6:30-7:30 p.m.)
Learn the basics of Greek dancing through music and organized steps. Simple dances taught to help dancers learn how to dance in a group and move to direction. Group performs at the Greek Festival and Apokriatiko Glendi and wear their own costumes from any regions from Greece, and some troupe costumes available if you do not own your own

Junior Troupe - Grades 4-6 (Practice from 6:30-7:30 p.m.)
Dances will learn more technical dances in two sets (Island Dances and Mainland Dances), which will be performed at the Greek Festival, Aprokriatiko Glendi, and other performances throughout the year. Dancers at this point will have leadership opportunities through dance where they can lead and teach dances to one another. We will start with the two dance sets from October and work thought them, learning each as the year moves forward. Junior Troupe dancers wear their own costumes from any regions of Greece, and some troupe costumes are available if you do not have your own. The Junior Troupe practices at the same time slot as the Asterakia, but will receive separate instruction.

Senior Troupe - Grades 7-12 (Practice from 7:30-8:30 p.m.)
Dancers in the Senior Troupe learn dances in two sets for the 2010-2011 year -- Pontic Dances and Mainland Dances. This will build onto previously learned dances, rounding out the sets to showcase various regions of Greece. The Senior Troupe performs at the Greek Festival, Aprokriatiko Glendi, Annual Dinner Dance, and other performances throughout the year. This past year, dancers performed at the St. Nicholas Greek-Serb Fest in Appleton, WI, along with other local performances.Senior Troupe dancers wear the Troupe Souliotissa Costumes, which were purchased by the Troupe this past year. Coordinating men's costumes will be purchased in the coming year following fundraisers.

The Agape Dance Troupe currently participates in two fundraising during the year -- coffee hour and Lenten Luminaries. Coffee Hour will be hosted in January (date to soon follow) and Lenten Luminaries are sold throughout Great Lent, through Palm Sunday. The Lenten Luminaries are $8 each or 3 for $20 (this pricing has come down a bit from last year). We ask each family to sell 10 luminaries in order to contribute toward the troupe's financial needs for the year. Fundraisers will allow us to continue to add to our costume repertoire and pay for the care of the costumes. They also support workshops and trips the Dance Troupe participates in to off-set the financial cost to Dance families.

Dance T-Shirts
In the 2008-2009 Dance year, members of the Senior Troupe designed troupe t-shirts that were available for purchase at cost ($11 each). Dancers have worn these on dance trips, to the Greek Festival and other events throughout the year. Dancers are invited to design shirts for this year and we will plan to order them in the next couple of months. There is no requirement to order -- this is completely optional. Stay tuned for more information if you are interested in purchasing a shirt for your dancer.
